party etiquette rules to break

I’ve given countless presentations on what etiquette people should follow, but there are a few rules any party-goer or thrower should look into breaking. You might just be surprised at them.

1. Be On Time

Tardy Trudies unite! For most parties, especially dinner parties, showing up 15 minutes after the start time is okay and courteous to the host.

2. Toasts Require Alcoholic Drinks

While Ancient Greeks toasted people with water whom they wished misfortune to, today, toasting with anything from water to a mocktail is perfectly acceptable. No alcohol required.

4. Don’t Talk Politics or Religion

I like to break this rule with specific guests, all of whom fall into the really good friends category. Hosting your boss for dinner? Probably not a great time to bring up your thoughts on the upcoming election, but with friends and family, these subjects can create interesting and enlightening discussions.

3. Always Send Paper Invites

Even I don’t send paper invites for every event I host. Gasp! Emily Post might disagree, but digital invites can work in a pinch so long as they set the stage for the event and give all the details guests need. While I still like to send paper invitations for events I want my family to remember like birthdays, baptisms, and showers, my Quick Cards are fantastic and immediate!
